21st Century Faith
A New Discussion Group at Trinity
Can people live simultaneously in a world of science and a world of faith? Can we find truth in both? How will we balance them, or even integrate them?
Trinity Parish is a community of faith within a community of science and technology, so questions like these arise within many of our personal faith journeys. We're eager to explore them together. A new discussion group will form this month to share ideas, conversations, and books and to hear speakers on the relationship between our modern science and ancient faith.
April 11 - Informal Organizational Meeting @ 7pm
Let's talk about what we want to do with this group. Bring your ideas!
April 18 - Speaker: Dr. Sjoerd J. Bonting, Priest-Scientist for the Diocese of California
6:30 pm - Gathering time with light refreshment; talk starts at 7:00 pm
Dr. Bonting will initiate our program with a talk titled, "Science-Theology Dialogue: Why and How?"
May 2 - Speaker: Dr. Sjoerd J. Bonting
6:30 pm - Gathering time with light refreshment; talk starts at 7:00 pm
In his second presentation, Dr. Bonting will introduce us to "Chaos Theology."
You need not be expert in either science or theology to participate, all who are curious and eager to share and learn should join in. Please contact Jay Dean at jay@gadean.com if you would like to be involved, or come to one of our meetings, and bring your friends who are doubtful that science and religion can mix!

Parish Work Day
The work-days in March made a big improvement in our beautiful campus, but there remains much to do. We need to prune, weed, plant and paint, and tend to our parish grounds before the summer arrives.
We'll have refreshments available and, you'll find, that many hands makes the work easy and fun. All manner of skills and abilities are needed, so come on down and take part. If you have some gardening tools to bring along, please do so. We have some but never enough, it seems. Gloves and a hat are a really good idea too. Bring the kids!

Apocalypse Now:
A Word of Hope for a Warring, Warming World
AN INVITATION FROM THE REV. FRANNIE HALL KIESCHNICK
Dear Friends,
A year and a half ago, my husband Michael Kieschnick and I "gave birth" to our third child, The Beatitudes Society.
Many of you have asked us lots of questions about who we are and about our mission to equip Christian leaders for prophetic witness to Jesus' call to justice, peace and compassion: How do Jesus' beatitudes fit in to The Beatitudes Society? Why just Christian leaders and not leaders of the other faith traditions? What does it mean to be a prophetic witness? Are you making a difference? How do you effect the public dialogue about faith and politics? Can I join even if I am not in seminary?
We are delighted to invite you to an early evening event at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Menlo Park, CA, to have many of your questions answered, to hear renowned "The Rapture Exposed" author, Barbara Rossing, to meet our seminarians and to share refreshments and conversation with like-minded, open hearted people of spirit!
The Rev. Barbara R. Rossing,Th.D., professor of New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, says rapture theology is “nuts” and it’s time to say “no” to the “Left Behind” fiction.
At the 2007 Trinity Institute, Rossing said that as we are faced with global climate change, escalating violence from wars around the world, and the pain of those who are being left behind in today's globalized economy, saying "no" is not enough. "If apocalypse means revealing, then the question for us today is what curtain did Hurricane Katrina pull back? What does it reveal? What do other events unveil for us?" Rossing asked. "Whether the accelerating melting of Greenland's ice, the war in Iraq, or 9/11 and its aftermath, how do we read these signs of the times?" The central message of the Book of Revelation, says Rossing, is "God's will is not to destroy our world but to heal it."
Come learn how to be part of the healing.
Barbara Rossing has worked as a Ranger at Mesa Verde National Park in Southwestern Colorado; chaplain to
Harvard Divinity School, and pastor at the Holden Village retreat center Washington’s Cascade Mountains. She is an avid hiker and environmentalist. She is currently on sabbatical leave, writing a book on ecology and apocalypse. She earned her master of divinity degree from Yale Divinity School and her doctor of theology degree from Harvard.
This event is free and open to the public.
There will also be a surprise raffle! Please bring people from your communities to Trinity for this evening of experiencing what it can mean to be a Christian in today's world.
It would help us in our planning if you would RSVP to stephanie@BeatitudesSociety.org.
Contact The Rev. Frannie Hall Kieschnick at revfhk@aol.com with any questions.
