Celebrating the “Splendid Spillane”

A joyful spirit infused the “celebration of thanksgiving for the life of the Rev. Michael James Patrick Spillane” on Saturday, April 19.
With the exception of the playing of the pipes – familiar to those with Irish or Scottish heritage – there was rarely a somber moment at his memorial. The Prayer Garden Gospel Ensemble set the lively tone, which was underscored by Patti Powell, who gave the homily about the man she called the “Splendid Spillane.”
Bishop Marc Andrus and Bishop Richard Garcia officiated in a show of ecumenism that Bishop Marc acknowledged and gave thanks for in his closing comments. And the Rev. Anne Jensen brought a familiar, comforting presence to the service, as did the sounds of the Trinity Ringers.
