Book Review - "The Question of God"
The Question of GodBy Dr. Armand M. Nicholi, Jr.
Dr. Nicholi’s book, on the surface, looks to be about two noted figures from the last century, Sigmund Freud and C. S. Lewis. The former, the Austrian “father of psychoanalysis”, and the latter, the English author, professor and Christian apologist, would seem to be entirely unrelated; randomly chosen from a list of historical figures. Nicholi’s thesis, however, holds that there is much that links these two, especially their influence on what they both believed to be one of the central questions of any age, the “question of God.”

August Book Club Reading
"War in Heaven"
by Charles Williams
Club members were looking for a good "summer book" to fill the remaining weeks of August, and found one in this classic by Charles Williams. Williams was one of the famed "Inklings", and an author of what T.S. Eliot described as "supernatural thrillers".

Discovering the Narrow Path
Discovering the Narrow Path by N. Graham Standish
The efforts we undertake as Christians to develop a stronger personal relationship with God are often described as at a "journey" or "pilgrimage". In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus describes the end of our pathway as the "narrow door." Presbyterian pastor and author N. Graham Standish, merges these metaphors in describing the "narrow path" that each must walk on his journey towards God. His book "Discovering the Narrow Path", is subtitled, "A Guide to Spiritual Balance", and it is the final word, "balance", that is the key to this powerful book.

Weekly Choral Evensong Broadcast
Not a book to review, but something that will give you a lot of pleasure if you enjoy listening to sacred music. Everyweek the BBC broadcasts a service of Choral Evensong from a different Cathedral. The music performed is sometimes very traditional, but also often new and innovative. Some of the most interesting (and successful) new classical music being written today is commissioned from the church. Keep Reading »

Men's Group Favorite Books
At the recent breakfast meeting of the Trinity Parishmen, the topic for discussion was "the three books that have most influenced your spiritual life." This is a small sampling of opinion, Trinity is well stocked with enthusiastic readers, but it is a good start on a " Trinity Recommended" reading list. Keep Reading »

God in Scripture, In Nature and Invisible

Who's Bible is It? by Jaroslav Pelikan
A excellent question, but one that is best answered by first exploring another question; rather than "who's Bible?", we need to ask, "which Bible?" Pelikan knows this well and subtitles his book, "A History of the Scriptures Down Through the Ages." He tells the story of how this holy book, actually many books from many authors, managed to survive and become a 21st century bestseller, and the many roles and readings it has adopted over it's long life. Reimagining Christianity
I suspect that most folks will quickly pigeonhole
Alan Jones, Dean of San Francisco's wonderful Grace Cathedral, as another one of those liberal Episcopalian writers and ignore him. Such a quick dismissal is undeserved and a great shame, as Jones presents a viewpoint that needs to be more widely discussed. The Reverend Jones, at this stage in his life, is exploring a spirituality that is very old and even "old-fashioned"; Jones does not set out to "debunk" any biblical stories or re-interpret large areas of the traditional faith. This book is more an effort to deepen Christianity and bring into it something new and something recovered. It is, in my mind, a very Anglican journey Jones is proposing. A deeper spiritual practice rather than a revamped dogma.; what he describes in his Preface as a "shared quest" Keep Reading »

A Book of Sermons?
That might strike you as an odd thing to be reading, a book of nothing but sermons, but there was a time when the collected sermons of well known preachers were very popular reading. In the Episcopal Church, we take pride (occasionally deservedly) for high-quality preaching, and a few of the best have published their weekly homilies for the benefit of all of us. One of the very best preachers in the Episcopal Church, and according to Baylor University one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English-speaking world, is Barbara Brown Taylor. Rev. Taylor is now a professor at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia and has published a number of books, including several selections of sermons. Keep Reading »Books for the Journey Archives
