Interim Rector's Reflections
Dear Friends,
February is a short month, but there’s so much packed into it! It’s a time when we think about love and Valentine’s Day. It’s a time when we remember and honor two of our greatest presidents, Washington and Lincoln and the love they had for their country, even if we combine them into President’s Day. It’s a time of school vacation. It’s a time of Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of Lent. And finally it is a time for me to say goodbye.
It seems to me Love is the common denominator. Magazine covers abound with pink hearts and beautiful roses, reminding us to think about how we are going to show our love to those closest to us. But as a faith community we also want to show our love for people we don’t know personally, but for whom we have great compassion, because we know God loves them, and they need a sign of that love and a helping hand. On February 10, we will have All that Jazz, a benefit dinner, dance and auction with a Mardi Gras theme to support our mission trip to the Gulf Coast. It will be a wonderful evening!
The Last Chance Fling Pancake Supper will be the following Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday. This is a great family night and a wonderful excuse to have pancakes for supper and share in creating a sense of community life for all ages.
Even Ash Wednesday is about love. It is a reminder of how much God loves us. One of the readings for the day tells us, “Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love…” (Joel 2:13) It is always God’s great desire for us to be in relationship with God and to be in relationship with each other through Christ.
And finally, on February 25, I will be saying goodbye. It will be a time to celebrate our time together and be thankful for all the ways we have blessed each other’s lives…a time for me to say how much this time together has enriched my life. I give thanks for the many kindnesses you have shown Doug and me, and I pray that the in the coming years you, both individually and as a faith community ,will thrive and will bear good fruit.
May God’s peace abide with you,
Anne+
