New Rector's Reflections
As I sit at the computer writing this first reflection for the Trinity Church newsletter, my daughter, Kim (age 7), is upstairs, brimming with excitement and anticipation as she gets ready for the Daddy/Daughter Valentine Day school dance that takes place this evening. A new dress has been bought, we’ve been practicing our dances all week (we will skip the hip-hop moves, because as she says “you’ll embarrass me”) and in a very short time we will begin our evening with a ‘meal’ at Delsa’s, a local ice cream parlor. It will be a great evening, full of memories.
In so many ways, Kim’s excitement and anticipation reflects my own excitement and anticipation as I get ready to begin serving and working with the people of Trinity Church, Menlo Park. I am truly honored and humbled to be called as the next Rector of this historic church. Your faithful witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ over the many years, both in the local community and beyond, speaks for itself. Your entrepreneurial spirit and faith says volumes when one looks at Trinity School, St. Bede’s, the Child and Family Institute, the newly completed chapel and numerous other ministries started by Trinity. The hospitality and the love that has been shown to the Spillane family by the search committee and the Vestry throughout the whole search process, is a testimony to the warmth and care that you have for one another as a Christian body.
I prayerfully look forward to being part of this vibrant community of faith as it begins a new chapter in its remarkable life. I prayerfully look forward to discovering together new ways to renew and refresh its mission and ministry. I prayerfully look forward to us becoming a community of miraculous expectation that is alive with the joy and the power and the potential of the living God. I prayerfully look forward to being part of a church that has one unifying passion: “the strong desire to rekindle the flame, to reignite the passion for a deep, more profound spiritual life and purpose and to forge ministries that provide opportunities for all people to share equally in the blessings of God’s love (p.13 church profile).
Soon, as with Kim above, we will be sharing a meal together. Not an ice cream sundae but the bread and the wine at the Sunday Holy Eucharist services where we are united with Christ and with one another. May this meal continually strengthen us for the exciting, joyful and God inspired journey that we have ahead of us.
Blessings, Fr. Mike
