Katrina Mission Trips 2007

During this past year we were able to complete two mission trips to Mississippi working directly with the victims of Hurricane Katrina’s disaster . A lot of work has been accomplished by the numerous volunteer organizations working mostly along the coastal areas of Mississippi and Louisiana. We plan on doing some work in the New Orleans areas once they get their political battles toned down so it is viable for us. Right now there are too many factions blaming each other and it is confusing and even a little bit dangerous in some parts of town. We have found that in Mississippi the victims don’t really consider themselves as such and their saying seems to be ‘The South will rise again!’

In February we sent a group of 11 adults (age 16 and above) to Camp Coast Care in Long Beach, MS. They are located on the grounds of Coast Episcopal School with round the clock staff and security. The organization is run by the Lutheran-Episcopal Disaster Relief of Mississippi.

In June we sent a group of 21 youth (age 12 & up) and adults to Mission on the Bay in Bay St. Louis, MS which is a subsidiary of Camp Coast Care . They are primarily directed towards getting youth groups involved in disaster relief. The group was so excited about being there and reaching out to the victims that they have requested making this Mission Trip ongoing each year until the work is done.

Gayle and I are very proud of those who were able to travel two thirds of the way across the country and be away from their family for a week. We are now beginning to plan for our next trip which will be held the last 2 weeks in February. Some will go for 1 week while others may want to stay up to 2 weeks. We will have the registration forms in September at Homecoming Sunday.
