The Rev. Coryl Lassen Joins Trinity as Interim Rector

The Vestry is delighted to announce that the Rev. Coryl Lassen will begin as our Interim Rector on Monday, June 16.

Corrie is a familiar and comforting presence to Trinity parishioners as Sunday preacher, serving ably in that capacity during Father Mike’s illness and following his death. She’s also known to Stanford students as their Episcopal Chaplain.

Her passion, she told the Interim Search Committee and the Vestry, is helping people deepen their relationship with God. Her strongest gifts in doing that are teaching, preaching and faith formation. She is deeply committed both to a life of prayer and to using tools which encourage people to support their faith and ministries with intellectual learning.

In her 24 years as a priest, Corrie served two parishes for 10 years each, as Rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ojai and Vicar of Calvary Episcopal Church in Pascoag, RI, involving herself in all aspects of parish life – children, youth and adults. More recently, she’s served in various interim posts while pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at San Francisco Art Institute. (Yes, she’s a painter as well as a pastor and preacher!)

Corrie writes to us:

“I have felt drawn to the people of Trinity for a long time. As you may know, I first started coming here in 2006, while Anne was Interim. I felt that the Spirit was moving in significant ways nearly every time I preached here. So it gives me great joy to be called to serve you in this difficult and awkward time.

“As I told the Vestry and Interim Search Committee, I feel a deep sense of fulfillment when working with congregations and people in transition, because of the honesty and spiritual seeking that are often a product of such times. I know many of you are sad and disappointed about Mike’s death and the lost hopes as a result of it. Those feelings are part of the reality of this time. Paying attention to them, rather than simply moving on as quickly as possible, is an important part of the process of reaching a new and better place as a congregation – and as individuals.

“In addition, there is the question of meaning. Where is God in this picture? I do not expect to answer that question for you. However, I do expect to be present with you as you feel and reflect and seek God together – and to offer the guidance that God gives me.

“I have been impressed with the compassion and courage of those of you with whom I’ve talked. I experience you as people who are seeking God and meaning in ways that are, perhaps, deeper than in the pas, and build on your prior experiences and accomplishments as a community. You have a remarkable and deeply committed group of leaders, and you have already come a long way in building your community. I don’t know where God is calling you at this moment, but I believe that continuing to deepen your relationship with God is an important part of that journey. I look forward to walking this part of it with you.”

Corrie will be in attendance at this Sunday’s services and will spend her first two weeks getting to know our parish better. She’ll then be away the first two weeks of July on a previously planned vacation. To juggle her commitment at Stanford, she’ll work at Trinity in an 80% position.

Please welcome Corrie – and give thanks to God for bringing her to us.

Yours in Christ,

The Vestry
