Holy Week and Easter Services and Schedule
Palm Sunday, April 14
8:00 AM - Liturgy of the Palms, Reading of the Passion Gospel, Sermon and Communion in the Church
10:00 AM - Liturgy of the Palm (begins in the Courtyard), Reading of the Passion Gospel, Sermon and Communion in the Church
On Palm Sunday we remember the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem just before his arrest, trial, and crucifixion. The Palm Sunday Gospel reading is a dramatic presentation of the events following Jesus' entrance into the city and concludes with the story of Jesus' death. In this respect, Palm Sunday anticipates Good Friday. Child care is available during the 10:00 am service.
Holy Wednesday, April 17
6:30 PM - Supper
7:30 PM - Tenebrae for the Earth
The Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of California, will be our special guest for this event that brings together the ancient tradition of Tenebrae with our contemporary climate change concerns. St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Palo Alto, is a partner with us for this event. Please join us for a simple supper and fellowship followed by this special service allowing us space to reflect on our climate challenges and commitments during Holy Week.
Maundy Thursday, April 18
at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Palo Alto
600 Colorado Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94306
6:15 PM - Supper & Maundy Thursday service at St. Mark's
8:30 PM - Stripping of the Altar at Trinity
9:00 PM to 7:00 AM Friday morning: All-Night Vigil in the Trinity Chapel
The Thursday before Easter commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, and the beginning of the Holy Meal, known today as Eucharist or Communion. The service begins with a simple meal in St. Mark's Parish Hall, followed by the traditional ritual of foot-washing for those who wish to receive it. Healing prayer and anointing, and/or a ritual hand-washing, are also offered. We then process into the St. Mark's sanctuary where the Eucharist is celebrated, concluding with the stripping of the Altar in anticipation of Good Friday.
After the service at St. Mark's you are invited to Trinity's sanctuary where we will strip our altar in preparation for our vigil and Good Friday. If you can't join us at St. Mark's, you are welcome to join us at Trinity at 8:30 as we strip our altar. Our All-Night Vigil begins at 9:00 PM and continues until the first service of Good Friday. People sign-up to take turns keeping vigil in the chapel. Please sign-up at church or contact our office.
Good Friday, April 19
7:00 AM -- Good Friday Liturgy with Communion (No Music) in the Chapel
12:00 Noon -- Stations of the Cross (Church)
7:30 PM -- Good Friday Liturgy with Choir, Hymns, Communion and Sermon in the Church
Good Friday is devoted to the remembrance of the Crucifixion, Death, and Burial of Jesus and to reflect on the meaning of the Crucifixion for us today.
Saturday, April 20
8:30 AM -- Prayers for Holy Saturday in the Church
This is a very brief prayer service for the morning of Holy Saturday.
7:30 PM -- Great Vigil of Easter, Baptism, and First Easter Communion
The beautiful Vigil service was at one time the only Easter service celebrated by the Christian community. Today, the service marks the end of Holy Week and, in the midst of it, the arrival of Easter is joyously proclaimed. After Easter is proclaimed, the first Easter Communion is celebrated. The service also includes hymns, choral music, and a brief sermon.
Easter Sunday, Sunday, April 21
6:30 AM -- Sunrise Communion Service in the Memorial Garden
This brief service takes place outside in our Memorial Garden just as the sun is rising. In the event of rain, it will be moved to the chapel. It includes a brief sermon and communion, but no music.
8:30 AM and 10:30 AM -- Festival Celebrations of Easter in the Church with Choir, Hymns, Sermon and Communion
An Easter Egg hunt in the courtyard follows the 10:30 AM service.
Please note the time change for Easter to 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM!
These services are the principal Easter services and are mostly the same. The only difference is that the Flowering of the Cross will be included at the 10:30 AM service. The service is joyous, with lots of music,
as well as sermon and Communion. Child care is available for the 10:30 AM service.
