Father Fred's Biography
Father Fred Heard, Associate Rector, comes to Holy Trinity with a varied background. A native Oregonian, Father Fred was born in Prineville, Oregon. After graduating from high school in Klamath Falls, he attended college at both the University of Oregon and Southern Oregon University receiving both BS and MS degrees.
Following graduation, Fred returned to the high school he attended and taught social studies and journalism there for the next seven years. In 1965, while attending graduate school, he met his wife Adair, and they were married in 1966. Following their marriage, Adair also started teaching math at Klamath Union High School. In 1968, Fred ran for the Oregon House of Representatives and was elected to the first of two terms as a State Representative. He was elected State Senator in 1972, 1976, and 1980. Serving as Senate Majority Leader for six years, he was elected President of the Senate in 1981. In 1976 and 1980, Fred was President Jimmy Carter's campaign co-chair in Oregon.
Governor Victor Atiyeh, a Republican, asked Fred to join his cabinet as Director of Commerce in 1983. He served in that position for nearly four years. The Department of Commerce regulated virtually all of business and industry in Oregon and contained eight divisions (banking, insurance, fire marshal, building codes, real estate, housing, corporations, and support services) and 23 professional licensing boards. The Department had 450 employees.
Following this service, Fred started a small successful general Contracting business and after several years returned to teaching-concluding his education career as principal of an elementary school.
Four years ago, Father Fred entered Northwest House of Theological Studies in Salem, a United Methodist seminary for mainline churches. He studied two years there and completed his degree work at Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, CA. He received a Master of Divinity degree in May 2003. He was ordained a Transitional Deacon June 21, 2003 and a Priest December 6, 2003.
Father Fred was called to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Menlo Park as Assistant Rector in July 2003, and he was promoted to Associate Rector February 24. 2004
Fred and Adair Heard are the parents of three adult children, and they have two grandchildren.
